Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting PNG to JPEG reduce quality?

JPEG uses lossy compression, so some detail is discarded. However, at quality levels above 85%, the difference is virtually invisible to the human eye. The trade-off is a dramatically smaller file size — often 50–90% smaller than the original PNG.

What happens to transparent areas in my PNG?

JPEG does not support transparency. Transparent areas are filled with a solid background color before conversion. By default this is white, but you can choose any color using the background color picker above the convert button.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs 100% in your browser. Your images never leave your device. The conversion happens locally using your browser's built-in Canvas API. No data is transmitted, no cookies are used, and no third-party services have access to your files.

What is the maximum file size?

Each file can be up to 25 MB, with a total limit of 100 MB across all uploaded files. You can upload up to 10 PNG images at once.

Can I convert JPEG back to PNG?

You can convert a JPEG file to PNG format, but you cannot recover the quality lost during the original PNG-to-JPEG conversion. JPEG compression is lossy — once detail is discarded, it cannot be restored. Always keep your original PNG files.

What quality setting should I use?

For photographs and web images, 85–95% is ideal. For thumbnails and previews, 60–75% works well. For archival quality, use 95–100%. The default of 90% is a good starting point for most use cases.

Why is my converted JPEG larger than the original PNG?

This can happen with very simple images like solid-color graphics or small icons. PNG compresses these efficiently because they have few unique colors. In these cases, keeping the image as PNG is the better choice.

Does this tool strip EXIF data?

Yes. The conversion process re-renders the image through a canvas element, which does not preserve EXIF metadata from the original PNG. If you need to preserve metadata, use a dedicated metadata editor after conversion.

Can I convert other formats to JPEG?

This tool is optimized for PNG-to-JPEG conversion. If you need to convert other formats like WebP, BMP, GIF, or TIFF to JPEG, use our Image Converter tool which supports 11 different output formats.

Will my images be saved if I close the browser?

Yes. Your uploaded images and conversion results are automatically saved in your browser's IndexedDB storage. When you return to this page, everything is restored exactly as you left it. Click Clear All to remove all stored data.

What Is PNG to JPEG Converter?

PNG to JPEG Converter is a free browser-based tool that converts your PNG images into JPEG (JPEG) format. PNG files are great for graphics with transparency, sharp edges, and lossless quality — but they tend to be large. JPEG uses lossy compression to produce dramatically smaller files, making it the go-to format for photographs, web images, and anywhere file size matters.

Everything runs 100% in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server. You can convert up to 10 PNG files at once, adjust the JPEG quality, choose a background color for transparent areas, compare file sizes, and download results individually or as a ZIP archive.

Features Explained

Adjustable JPEG Quality

Control the compression level with a quality slider from 1% to 100%. Higher values produce sharper images with larger files. Lower values produce smaller files with more compression artifacts. The default of 90% gives an excellent balance between visual quality and file size for most images.

Background Color for Transparency

PNG supports transparency but JPEG does not. When converting, transparent areas need to be filled with a solid color. By default this is white, but you can pick any color using the color picker — useful when your image will be displayed on a colored background or when you want a specific look.

Batch Processing

Upload and convert up to 10 PNG images at once. Each file is processed individually with its own progress indicator, so you can track the status of every image. All files share the same quality and background color settings.

Drag & Drop Upload

Drag PNG files directly from your file explorer onto the upload area. You can drop multiple files at once. The tool validates each file and shows an error if a file exceeds the 25 MB size limit or if the maximum of 10 files is reached.

Clipboard Paste

Press Ctrl+V to paste an image directly from your clipboard. This is especially useful for converting PNG screenshots — take a screenshot, paste it into the tool, convert, and download the JPEG without ever saving the PNG to disk.

File Size Comparison

After conversion, each thumbnail shows 'Image Converted' with the format change (PNG → JPEG). The smart label above the grid displays overall statistics — total original size, total converted size, and the percentage saved across all images.

ZIP Download

When converting multiple images, download all results as a single ZIP archive. Each file inside keeps its original name with the extension changed to .jpg. For a single image, the download is a direct JPEG file.

Auto-Save Progress

Your uploaded images and conversion results are saved automatically in your browser using IndexedDB. If you accidentally close the tab or refresh the page, everything is restored exactly as you left it. Click Clear All to remove all stored data.

File Size Savings

PNG to JPEG conversion typically reduces file sizes by 50–90%, depending on the image content and chosen quality level. Photographs see the largest savings because JPEG compression is optimized for continuous-tone images. Graphics with flat colors and sharp edges may see smaller reductions.

Lossless to Lossy Conversion

PNG is a lossless format — it preserves every pixel exactly. JPEG is a lossy format — it discards imperceptible details to achieve smaller files. At quality levels above 85%, the visual difference is virtually undetectable to the human eye, but the file size reduction is significant.

Tips for Converting PNG to JPEG

Use quality 85–95% for photos

Photographs look virtually identical to the original at these levels but can be 60–80% smaller. Below 80% you may start noticing compression artifacts in gradients and skin tones.

Use lower quality for thumbnails

Thumbnail images are displayed small, so compression artifacts are much less visible. Quality levels of 60–75% work well for thumbnails and save significant bandwidth on gallery pages.

Choose the right background color

If your PNG has transparency and will be displayed on a specific background (like a dark website), set the background color to match. This prevents a jarring white rectangle behind your image.

Keep your original PNGs

JPEG conversion is lossy and irreversible. Always keep your original PNG files archived. If you need to make edits later, start from the PNG to avoid compounding quality loss.

Don't convert logos or icons

Logos, icons, and text-heavy graphics with sharp edges look better as PNG. JPEG compression creates visible artifacts around hard color boundaries. Only convert photographs and continuous-tone images.

Check the size difference

After conversion, compare the PNG and JPEG file sizes shown on each thumbnail. If a particular image barely shrinks (less than 10%), it may be better left as PNG — some simple graphics compress well in PNG.

Use batch mode for efficiency

If you have multiple PNGs to convert, upload them all at once instead of one by one. Convert All processes every image in a single pass, and Download All packages them into a ZIP.

Convert screenshots for sharing

Screenshots captured as PNG are often 2–5 MB. Converting to JPEG at 90% quality typically shrinks them to 200–500 KB — small enough to paste in Slack, email, or Jira without hitting upload limits.

Test different quality levels

If file size is critical, try converting the same image at different quality levels. Convert, check the result, clear, adjust quality, and convert again. Find the sweet spot where the image still looks good.

Mind the transparency

Before converting, check if your PNG uses transparency. If it does, the transparent areas will be filled with your chosen background color. Preview the result to make sure it looks right before downloading.
